Summer Mission Continues at Brown University

Michael is a junior at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. This past summer he participated in the Cru Wildwood Summer Project (mission trip). He helped lead the team of over 60 students the final five weeks of the Project.

Students on the Wildwood Summer Project work alongside many international students on the Wildwood, New Jersey beach boardwalk. Over the course of the summer they become friends with their co-workers.

At the end of the summer Michael wrote, “The final outreach we did was ‘Beach Bash.’ I met one woman who had recently lost her job and was struggling with what God had planned for her life.

“I also met a teenager who didn’t believe he had a life because he had dropped out of school to take care of his mother who had Alzheimer’s.

“I was skeptical that people would open up, but all God wanted was for me to just try and He really opened up people’s hearts to sharing their lives.”

Michael also said, “The final night of the project many of the international friends we had made over the summer came to see us. During those few hours, we saw at least 5 people come to Christ.”

Michael’s summer was transformational for the people God touched through him. And it was transformational for him.

He learned to share his testimony and facilitate a Bible study. He regularly introduced others to Jesus.

As he finished the summer he wondered, “How do I apply what I have learned here to my ministry at Brown?”

This semester Michael has been facilitating prayer meetings, initiating spiritual conversations with his classmates, delivering welcome desserts to freshman dorm rooms and going to school. His fervor for sharing Jesus with his peers is contagious.

Michael is one of many reasons why Nate is excited to be able to provide the tools necessary for the operational support necessary for Cru Summer Projects to happen around the world.

Thank you for partnering in seeing students become contagious Jesus followers on their campuses and around the world. We are grateful for you!

Freshmen & Jesus

Pictures can be a springboard to conversation. As students respond during a fall semester activity fair, there are opportunities to talk about the intersection of life and Jesus.

Like leaves blown by the wind, freshmen and their parents drifted into town before coming to rest at the dorm entrance. A flurry of unpacking, a final family dinner, goodbyes, tears and life changes. “Will my son be OK?” “Will my daughter?”

Cru staff members mentor students, helping them to navigate these changes and find a solid footing in relationship with Jesus.

Joe, a Cru staff member, has talked with many freshmen about Jesus this fall at the University at Albany.

Brett is from a churched background, but doesn’t believe in Jesus. He has reservations about trusting what he can’t see.

James wants to discover who God is on his own. Joe walked through the gospel with him. James now has a place to begin his investigation of God.

Mike is consumed by school. He understood the gospel as he talked with Joe, but he wasn’t ready to surrender his life to God.

Jack is a self-proclaimed agnostic who grew up in a Christian home. He desires community on campus. He is attending a Cru Bible study.

Joe read John 1 with Phil. Although he had been told many times what to believe about Jesus, he never understood why he should believe. Phil placed his faith in Jesus so he could begin a relationship with God.

Thank you for your partnership with us, as we help Cru staff like Joe introduce
students to Jesus. They are hearing about Jesus because of your prayers and financial partnership.

Freshmen welcomed to campus

The end of August is Activities Fair time on college campuses around the country. Students, especially freshmen, investigate the many student clubs on their campus and look for the best “free stuff” they can find.

Cru often has a table in the middle of the action. Here students from Simmons College in Boston complete brief spiritual interest surveys, connect with Cru student leaders, and receive a bag of goodies—including a book like Blue Like Jazz, by Donald Miller or Mere Christianity, by C. S. Lewis. The connections these freshmen make during an Activities Fair will help determine their experience during the rest of college. Please pray for them!
